Old pupils team up in respect for school
AN exhibition to celebrate the life and journey of one of the oldest schools in Fareham is to take place later this year.
Price's Grammar School was opened in 1725 and served the youngsters of Fareham until 1982.
It was established by William Price, a Fareham timber merchant, and began life in West Street.
In 1901 it closed for some years and reopened in 1908 as an all boys' school in the new location of Park Lane.
In 1976 it became a sixth-form college and then in 1982 essentially disappeared when it was combined with Fareham Technical College to become Fareham College.
Former pupils who are part of the Society of Old Priceans have now teamed up with Westbury Manor, Fareham, to hold an exhibition in memory of the school.
The exhibition will outline the important role the school played in the community.
David Williams, 72, from Portchester, attended the school from 1947 to 1951 and has been a part of a society of former pupils for some years.
He said: 'The exhibition aims to celebrate the School's life and times so that visitors can become aware of William Price's considerable contribution to education in Fareham.
'For society members and former pupils it will be an opportunity to revisit memories.'
The exhibition will open at Westbury Manor, West Street, on Saturday, May 3, and will run from Monday to Saturday until Saturday, June 21.
On Sunday, June 8, there will be an arranged walk from the original site of the school in West Street to the later site in Park Lane.
There people can join in a commemorative service at St Peter's and St Paul's Church, followed by a summer luncheon.
If you are a former pupil or relative of one, and would like to get involved in the exhibition and/or have memorabilia you wish to loan to the society, then contact David Williams on (023) 9238 7869.
