On the right lines for railway buffs

Railway sleepers removed from a disused line are to be donated to a railway preservation society.

Sleepers and tracks will be removed as work takes place next year to clear the old railway line between Fareham and Gosport for investigation into a proposed high-speed bus route.

Councillor Mel Kendal, who is in charge of environmental issues at Hampshire County Council, said: 'Railway enthusiasts are always looking for this type of thing as they are very hard to come by.

'I've always been very impressed by the work railway preservation societies do in the south to preserve our railway heritage and I'm sure the sleepers are going to a good home.'

They will be removed as work to clear the track starts again in January so a survey of the site can go ahead.

The work is being carried out from Redlands Lane, Fareham, to Holbrook in Gosport.
