Pensioner killed by brain disease
A pensioner with a rare and incurable brain disease died from natural causes.
William Kitson, from Jay Close, Stubbington, died at the Rowans Hospice in Purbrook on January 28 after his health rapidly deteriorated.
An inquest as told how a post-mortem examination revealed that Mr Kitson, 69, died of bronchopneumonia and a then an unidentified brain disease.
Samples of his brain tissue were sent to a specialist unit in Edinburgh which showed Mr Kitson had suffered from Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease.
The incurable disease only affects one in a million people, and a variant of it has also been identified as the human form of so-called 'mad cow' disease.
CJD has also been linked to people treated with human growth hormones, but Mr Kitson was never given any such treatment.
Deputy coroner for central Hampshire Simon Burge recorded a verdict of death by natural causes.
