Planners to decide on homes bid for fort

CONTROVERSIAL plans to turn Fort Gilkicker into luxury homes will go before councillors next month.

Developers want to transform the fort at Stokes Bay, Gosport, into 26 hi-spec flats.

A public consultation into the plans ended yesterday, with eight letters for and eight against the multi-million pound project.

Now it's up to Gosport council's planning committee on November 11 to decide whether to give it the go-ahead. Don Gordon, chairman of the Fort Gilkicker Action Group, which has been fighting plans to redevelop Gilkicker for years, said: 'It will be of no benefit to the people of Gosport. It will just be an enclave for affluent newcomers.'

The flats would be built inside the original gun casemates of the listed ancient monument.

There will also be a display room featuring artefacts uncovered in an archaeological dig at the site, which is expected to take months and will be held before work begins on the development.

Developer Askett Hawk said the flats could be finished by spring 2010.
