INJURED Damian Nunn has launched an emotional plea for help in finding the ‘coward’ who attacked him with a glass bottle.

The 21-year-old was enjoying a night out at the Coach and Horses pub in London Road, Hilsea, Portsmouth, when he was set upon.

He went outside for a cigarette and was making his way back in when a man smashed the glass bottle over the back of his head.

Damian, from Hilsea, said: ‘Two inches lower and he would have hit the top of my spine. It would have been a hell of a lot worse.

‘Actually using a bottle to hit someone – it takes a certain kind of someone to do that and a coward as well. I was stood outside having a cigarette.

‘The whole time he was stood a couple of feet away from me.

‘At any time he could have said something but he waited for me to walk back into the building.

‘I literally had my hand on the back of the door when he did it.’

Damian was left stunned and bleeding after the attack, which happened at about 8.10pm on February 3.

Now anyone with information about the assault is urged to contact police.

Mr Nunn added: ‘I had never seen him before in my life.

‘I went back into the pub to a group of my friends, put my hand on the back of my head and there was blood everywhere – it was dripping all down me.’

PC Alan Hunter, said: ‘This was a completely unprovoked attack.

‘The victim was walking back into the pub and for no reason the offender hit him round the back of the head with a bottle.

‘The victim had no idea the assault was about to happen so had no chance to defend himself.

‘The offender should be ashamed of himself after committing this cowardly and disgraceful act.

‘There were a number of people around at the time of the incident who may have witnesses what happened.

‘I am urging these people to come forward and speak to us.’

The suspect is white, aged in his early 20s, 6ft tall and of a medium build.

He wore a dark top and beige trousers.

Call PC Hunter at Cosham police station on 101 quoting crime reference number 44120048324.

Or contact the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555111.

How many more incidents like this have to happen before the Council (and specifically the cabinet member for Community Safety) gets of their backside and does something about it. Portsmouth is turning into Dodge City and no-one is man (or woman) enough to do anything about it. To the complacent, arrogant bunch of opportunists who do not care about the average Portsmouth citizen and who are in the majority in the Guildhall I offer a choice, either do something and quickly or come May we will replace you with someone who will!!!!!!.

Lets get some perspective here. I have lived in Southsea and Portsmouth area for over 35 years, been to hundreds of pubs, clubs, concerts etc and have never been assaulted, threatened or verbally abused. The fear of crime is indeed far greater than the incidence of crime. Such attacks as this are distressing for the victim, and hopefully the assailant will be caught, but they are relatively rarely. Unfortunately it's the combination of youth(mainly lads) and drink which provides the dangerous cocktail leading to fights. Thankfully Damien survived this one - but someone out there knows who attacked him. Let's hope they come forward.

Maybe the offender is one of them 'anti smoking outside of a pub' vigilantes I have heard about If you ask me, all smokers should be bottled as they are killing all of us non smokers softly with the fumes and poisonous gasses!!

Nothing new unfortunately about incidents such as these in Pompey. In 1986 I was glassed and had 48 stitches in my face and to be honest, nothing has changed in the city. It wasn't until I statred working away from home more that I realised this city is known throughout the country as the city where you are more liable to be glassed than spoken to. Sad but true.

@udontknow - If you got hit in the head with a Beer Bottle, wouldn't YOU have an attitude?

Someone will know who this thug is. I warrant that someone posting on this story knows! Where's the CCTV footage? And as for unprovoked, it DOES happen all the time. My mate, and several others, had their cars trashed by travellers in a pub in Locks Heath - the reason? Because the travellers got refused service because they were drunk and becoming aggressive towards the staff. They went outside, smashed up four customers cars, then went back inside and said to the staff, "We've just cost you a lot of money." The morons didn't cost the pub a thing. The idiots just cost innocent people having a pleasant night out a lot of money and inconvenience. When our justice system sits up and starts putting these thugs and lowlifes in a 6x5 cell with nothing more than a sink and toilet for company, for a day for every pound they cost the victim, or a year for every scar, then we'll see this sort of attitude stop. As a police officer said recently, because kids these days are brought up with a sense they can do ANYTHING, they do.

Graham, logical assumptions...Out drinking with mates...Goes outside for a fag...someone else or more then someone else is there as well and he gets hit while turning and walking back in? The story doesn't say why or what transpired to make it happen, If they were standing next to each for quite somtime something must have been said and he should have gotten a good description and i'm sure whoever did it goes to pub on a regular basis and someone inside knows who it is.\

I got punched in the face by an idiot on the back of a motorbike racing along a public footpath (away from any road) once. They were doing wheelies and travelling about 20 mph. One of them stuck his fist out as they passed me by. My nose bled quite a bit but it was the unprovoked bit that hurt the most. I'd done nothing except mind my own business. They were cowards too because they rode off at speed narrowly missing a family with small children. Dispite the fact there were two of them they didn't have the guts to come back and face me. Putting his fist out when on a motorbike travelling at speed hopefully the TW@T broke his hand. Of course Plod did nothing except refer me to victim support which I refused. I wonder if Plod would have been so useless if the bike had clipped one of the small children. Anyway there are plenty of cowards out there if you ever get the chance to sort one out go for it, you'll get a huge sense of satisfaction. Just make sure there are no witnesses or cameras watching when you do it or it will be you who is the bad guy and you'll end up in a lot of trouble while Mr Coward plays victim.

udontknow (5), in view of your site-name, I would have thought that you'd try to avoid making some of the gross assumptions that you have done. How do you conclude that the victim has an 'attitude' or that he was drunk? Perhaps you have more information about the incident, in which case you should offer that to PC Hunter and his colleagues.

Sorry but used to happen in bars and pubs and clubs all the time,we big boys used to wait for it to happen, usually after a billiards game or darts. Try going to a puub and having a drunk playing darts miss and hit you.. Like all stories the news does it only tells the ending, like walking by some one or people a only hearing the end of a conversation and thinking strange thoughts without hearing the whole story. Looks like the story the victim has a slight attitude?,could he have been provoked since they were both drunk?

@1 - I understand the sentiment BUT Pompey is generally a pretty safe city. I would guess the fear of crime is greater than the actual risk of crime - there are lots of safe, busy pubs to drink in without the threat of violence ! That said - agreed, there are scumbags out there but no more in Pompey than any other city or town.

As the story states, only a coward would attack someone in this way. Hope they catch the pathetic low life that did it.
