Plumber ordered to stop using home as base

The owner of a well-known plumbing firm is engaged in a fight with a council over allegations he has been running his business from his home.

Havant Borough Council is taking enforcement action after officers received complaints from residents in Lisle Way, Emsworth.

People there said the firm – PJ Plumbing Services – was effectively being run from the small street, causing major upheaval for them.

Residents complained about the noise, and the extra pressure on the parking situation with staff at the firm taking up valuable spaces in the small, 14-home cul-de-sac.

This week councillors will decide whether to force company boss Peter Terry, 27, to stop working from home for good after officers found eight employees used the site to pick up and drop off work equipment.

Mr Terry said he used his home briefly in February as a temporary stopgap between the closure of his old base in Liss and the move into a new unit in Cosham.

He said the only time employees come to his house now is to pick him up for work or drop off the odd piece of paperwork.

'I kept some bits here when I first moved here because there was nowhere else to put them but that was just for a while,' he said.

'I've only ever had one big delivery and that must have been February time. We do central heating and fit boilers in people's homes so there is no need to keep equipment here – I have a unit now.

'I have an office at home where I do my paperwork but that's it.'

If Havant's planning committee vote to take enforcement action against Mr Terry when they meet on Thursday he will have to remove all plumbing supplies and equipment and stop operating from the site within two months.

If he fails to comply with the order he will be taken to court.
