Police hunt racists after abuse in Hampshire village

An Indian restaurant worker was racially abused by a group of white men as he left work for the night.

The gang shouted racist abuse at the victim as he left the Paprika Indian restaurant in Horndean Precinct.

And when he tried to drive off they threw a bottle at his windscreen, smashing it and showering him with glass.

Police say it was lucky the man was not hurt in the attack.

They have now released these CCTV pictures of the men they want to speak to.

PC David Gray said: 'This was a serious and deliberate racially motivated incident on a man who was merely leaving work and heading home.

'Thankfully he was not injured but he was extremely fortunate not to have been cut as he was showered with broken glass both from the bottle and his windscreen.

'This kind of incident is rare but police take any racially motivated attack very seriously.

'The incident has left the victim understandably shaken and upset and we are very keen to track down the person responsible.

'We have spoken to several witnesses and examined CCTV from the area in a bid to identify the group of men.

'We believe that the man who threw the bottle is white, aged between 20 and 25 and was wearing a short-sleeved white shirt or T-shirt.

'We would like to hear from anyone who recognises these men or was in the area at the time and has any information.'

The incident took place shortly before midnight on Friday, June 5 as the victim, a 52-year-old man from Portsmouth, drove out of the precinct car park.

He told police he heard racial abuse being shouted at him before the bottle was thrown at his car.

The group of men ran off and the victim contacted the emergency services.

Anyone with information should contact PC Gray at Waterlooville police station on 0845 045 45 45 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
