Police may probe Le Tissier betting scam revelation
Hampshire police have confirmed they could investigate a £10,000 betting scam revealed by ex-Southampton captain Matt Le Tissier in his book.
Officers have been asked to look into claims made by the former England midfielder over a Premier League match he played in 14 years ago.
The Guernsey-born footballer admitted in his autobiography conspiring with friends to cash in on a spread bet on the timing of the first throw-in.
He stood to gain a four-figure sum if he could have kicked the ball out of play in the first moments of the match, but another player intercepted his pass and kept in on the pitch.
Le Tissier said last week that he had included the story to warn current footballers about the dangers of football betting scams.
Hampshire Police confirmed they are talking to the FA about the revelation.
A spokesman for Hampshire Police said: 'Police have been made aware of an historic spread-betting scam allegation in the 1990s.
'We have made contact with the FA and are in discussions with them.'
An FA spokesman added: 'Clearly this sort of action would be against our rules.
'Had it happened now we would take action we deemed appropriate.'
