Police move in on travellers

TRAVELLERS attempted to battle their way on to land at Port Solent after being moved on from a business park earlier in the day.

Six vehicles – a white Transit van, a blue Transit van and four caravans – tried to force their way past security officers at Port Solent Recycling Centre at 2.30pm yesterday.

Police were called and helped remove the travellers from the site.

They later stopped outside Mother Kelly's restaurant, on Southampton Road, but stayed for only a short period before moving again towards Southampton.

Police could not confirm where the group had stopped for the night.

A Hampshire police spokeswoman said: 'We were called out and asked to move some travellers off the land at the recycling centre, but if they stop on public land then it's not a criminal offence.

'We know they stopped for a while on Southampton Road, which may just have been a chance for them to regroup before moving on somewhere else.

'If travellers are trespassing then people should call us, but if they are not committing an offence it would not be down to us to move them along.'

It is believed the group was the same as a convoy which had been spotted in Portsmouth city centre on Wednesday evening.
