Police close road after street brawl
A MAN has been arrested following a brawl outside a Horndean pub in the early hours.
Police were called to The Colonial Bar, in Portsmouth Road, at 1.40am following an incident involving 10 people outside the premises.
The road outside the bar has been closed while officers carry out an investigation.
A 33-year-old man from Fareham was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital with a head injury which police say is potentially serious.
Officers said he is stable at the current time.
A 34-year-old man, from Waterlooville, was arrested at 2.15am on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm without intent.
He remains in police custody for questioning.
Detectives are investigating the possibility that the victim was assaulted in Portsmouth Road.
A police spokesman said: ‘Part of Portsmouth Road remains closed today so potential evidence at the scene can be preserved for initial enquiries by police.
‘Officers plan to re-open the road as soon as these inquiries are completed.’
A diversion route along Merchistoun Road has been set up.
It is hoped Portsmouth Road will re-open later today.
Witnesses or anyone with information can contact CID at Waterlooville police station by phoning 101.

Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at 12:40 PMOf course each staff member's posts are their own views but, come on, would you expect the staff and family members of the pub's management to make anything other than positive comments? I've been to the Colonial Bar a number of times over the past 45 years as a performing musician. Of course, i've only been there on Saturday nights so cannot speak for any other night of the week but my experience of the pub has never been good. I cannot recall a night when there hasn't been some level of violent disorder at the end of the night, though admittedly always outside - the doorstaff always do a good job of getting it outside into the car park. With that objective successfully reached they then usually spectate. I certainly agree with the comments regarding people who have had too much to drink and have never seen anybody refused service and asked to leave (though I'm sure it happens very occasionally). Indeed I recall once occasion when a 'lady', so inebriated that she could not even speak (despite it only being around 8pm!), effectively assaulted one of my band colleagues. When I brought this to the landlady's attention (the current landlady, i hasten to add) her exact response was "get over it - you're all big enough men to be able to sort her out"! The same 'lady' continued to be served throughout the evening. Like a number of local acts, my band no longer plays the Colonial Bar. We only play music for fun and the constant threat of violence, coupled with an inherent couldn't-care-less attitude amongst the management, mean that the Colonial Bar is now pretty much top of the avoid list for most of the top local acts. It's a great shame as the place could be a fantastic venue which could even rival The Brook in Southampton and the Wedgwood Rooms in Southsea. Unfortunately the establishment is rotten from the top down, so I can't see that happening anytime soon - the only time people will be talking about the Colonial is following such events as the one above. Unless you're a 'pint & a fight' type, this is one to be given a very wide berth

Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at 11:31 AMI must say, the Colonial Bar is the most intriguing place around the area, and I somewhat as a customer myself, do not feel any threat towards myself or others around me when I am within the premises. I often feel rather safe and secure, the thought of knowing that the staff andor the door staff can hand;e situations very well, and often nip the bud very quickly. There is not a single threat to people on the actual premises of the Colonial, as every aspect is always being watched, and as Katie has said, they do regular checks of the placetoilets etc to ensure there are no drug substances being distributed andor consumed within the premises. The Colonial Bar is not a hot spot for fights to kick of or arguments to happen, this is often started by people who either cannot handle their drink, or if they have too much to drink they are not with it and tend to not care, as it was also mentioned if they a fight is about to arise, on most occasions they will be asked to leave the premises. This is all I have to say for now. P.S The Colonial Bar is 100% safe and likes to pride itself in the care and respect of their customers.

Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 06:48 PMHi everybody - Will just start by saying a thankyou for all your comments and they have been taken on board - In my own defence and behalf of the staff here at The Colonial Bar Horndean I will answer any comments that have been posted after my previous comment. We are not rife for drugs and we have regular toilet checks in place every hour by staff and door staff to prevent any possible drug misuse problems that may occur. The women comment - women are looked after in here and any problem reported to us is dealt with immediately, Any woman on a night out can be eyed up in any place - single people use this venue and that's just what happens, but the comment about them being handled etc couldn't be more wrong. Futhermore, I have not stated we are a golden venue with no problems. I agree, we do have problems as does any venuepublic house but we could not be more on top of it. I certainly have not been asked myself and have not asked any other staff to comment on this news report, they have done so off their own back and i think their opinion is just as important as the general public so they should not be criticised for it. I may very well be the owners daughter but also know my job and have trained fully for my job - any comment i post should be read as an individual just like i have read the rest. This is the last comment we will post but we hope people understand this was not any intention of ours - Sincerest apologies for anybody that disagrees with this venue, but we have a lot of customers who thoroughly enjoy weekend after weekend in here with no trouble atall - it is unfortunate there are a few that will ruin it for everybody. Thanks, Katie

Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 12:20 PMThe post's from the staff members (owners daughter ?) are much as you'd expect ? Major point being does Horndean really need a place that stays open that late and clearly allows people to get absolutely ' out of it' either with drink or maybe other substances ? No thanks - And it is not a nice place for women as it is just like a D&S meatmarket which may not be seen from behind the bar ? Needs to reinvent itself or close ?

Monday, February 20, 2012 at 06:50 PMThe incident may well have culminated outside the pub but it certainly started inside. It's a bit disingenious to try and deflect criticism of the place by claiming part of the assault took place outside and therefore did not involve the pub. The Colonial Bar is also rife with cocaine usage and dealing. Unfortunately this comes with the territory of being a pub aimed at the younger element and the Colonial is no different to any of the other pubs geared towards similar clientele. The problem appears concentrated because the pub is the only one in the local area that caters for such a crowd and is therefore going to attract such people whereas this would be more dispersed in a city. Overall the place appears to be run well but those comments suggesting that trouble doesn't occur there are misleading.

Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 06:39 PMI must agree with chubbles91 - Myself, the landlady, landlord, the bar staff and door supervisor team work extremely hard on weekends up at The Colonial Bar. Like the majority of places you will go on the weekends - you have behaved, friendly clientell and you get the odd off customers that are not welcome on our premises if they do something we consider to be wrong. INCLUDING making customers and staff uncomfortable, being drunk and disorderly, violence, drug abuse or underage drinking - if any signs of the above behaviour is displayed then the customer will be asked to leave immediately. The incident Littleep is talking about was handled correctly by door staff and CCTV caught the whole incident - This CCTV has been shown to the licensing officer and also the police, if the situation had been seen to of been dealt with unfairly or even moved off camera then we definately would not have been open the next evening with the same team of doorstaff. It's a shame that the two mentioned men involved in that incident got hurt wether it be by the doorstaff or the police or other customers even - but the situation itself in terms of the law was dealt with rightly so that should clear that up. As for the incident with the knife and barman - that was another pub situated in horndean which i will not name, but it was not our venue, so that's a complete mix up. For any body who drinks in here regularly you will know that a venue this large in such a small community can get a mixture of customers - not always a bad thing !! Futhermore, the professionalism and mannger of door supervisors up here and also bar staff is on top form at all times and this venue is run completely 100% in the correct way. As for the complaints about the youngsters that have been violent lately - i could not disagree more, it is true that we have had a couple of incidents lately but nothing serious just average weekend problems that any pubclub or venue would expect and I think if the majority of the complaining general public did their research properly they would find that this particular incident was involving people in the age range of 30 to 40 and no younger, so that should also clear that up. The discussed incident that took place on Friday 17th Feb, was considered off the premises by staff and police and every member of staff controlled the situation in the correct way possible until the police had turned up. If we hadn't then we wouldn't still be open for business as usual. I have worked in this venue for 5 years now and have never felt threatened by any customers in all them years - the place has had the odd fight but what pub based in portsmouthhampshire or even UK area does not have the odd spot of trouble? It is unfortunate that the police blocked the road off and untrue rumours have started but the real reason for Portsmouth road being blocked is because a head injury is always taken extremelely serious by the police and when it was confirmed that the injured person was stable and doing well the road was unblocked allowing us to open again. Myself and my staff will always try our hardest to control any situation and keep people safe happy and allow them to continue with their enjoyment of their night out - We would never treat anybody unfairly and always deal with things in the right way possible. The Colonial Bar can be a very lovely place to drink AND work too - It is a shame that people have to put their tuppence worth in and dramatise an incident fairly small so that a venue receives bad press and rumours begin - Running a pub is not easy as i'm sure any body in any area also running a pub will agree, but we try our best and we hope that many people will over look this situation as a big misunderstanding and continue coming up for the weekends as it's still the famous live music venue but we've just had a bit of bad luck. Thanks to everybody who have supported us and your loyalty as customers and staff has really shone through - I sencerely hope this clears up a little confusion for the general public. Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 04:33 PMI work here and I do not feel threatened by any customers. Every pub or club have their customers that drink too much but that is not just the colonial bar. I find working there the atmosphere is lovely and people are always friendly. The ones who drink too much often leave or get asked to leave if they cause trouble. What happened the other night wasn't on our premises but in the street outside and our staff done their best to try and control the situation until the police arrived. 3 months ago we had all female staff so I don't know where the knife thing and argument with a barman comes from. Our manager and owners are amazing people and are always friendly and handle situations calm and collectively. If it is not a nice place to come we would have no business so again that is untrue. Everyone has a good night and apart from a few people who drink too much theres not alot of trouble. Women AND men come up to have a good time, and theres very very rarely any complaints about people feeling like they are being leered at and if there ever are any its dealt with immediately. So I hope this clears the air a bit about the environment and atmosphere in the colonial bar x

Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 04:04 PMThat place is nothing but trouble. I know of three youngsters who have been manhandled very seriously by the bouncers but unfortunately the CCTV never has enough footage to prosecute. I would sign a petition to close this place as it is ruining Hornsean

Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 09:31 AMI am sorry but I must disagree with Platinum62. Every time I have been there with my husband or friends the police have turned up outside the bar. It is a meat market where lots of single men go to leer at women. People get way too drunk there. On one occasion I had to get security because a woman was so drunk in the toilet . It was only 3 months ago that the police were there because there was an incident with a knife and argument with a barman. This has been an incident waiting to happen for ages now. Hence to say we do not go there any more and we tell our friends its not a nice place to go unless you are going out to be leered at.

Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 07:29 PMThe Colonial Bar is one of the best Venues in this area, this type of incident is extremely rare!! I am a female who can go to this bar alone if i want without feeling uncomfortable and the welcome from Ian and Maggie the Owners,is always lovely along with the friendly and professional Bar staff, Its a shame that a few Yobs should choose this Bar for their puerile behaviour when there are other establishments where its the norm,.....Just my Opinion.
