Police hail drop in anti-social behaviour

ANTI-social behaviour reports have nosedived following a summer police crackdown.

Complaints about yobbish behaviour and criminal damage across Hampshire between late May and August fell 11 per cent compared with the previous year.

Total incidents across the county went down from 60,790 to 53,774.

Portsmouth saw a 10 per cent drop on last year.

Its biggest success was in reducing 'vehicle nuisance' incidents, which fell by more than a third from 361 to 221 reports.

And in the Central policing area, which covers Fareham, Gosport, Havant and Winchester, reported incidents fell by 22 per cent from 12,692 to 9,876.

Reports of rowdy and inconsiderate behaviour in the streets showed the biggest drop, with complaints falling from 3,582 to 2,460 - a 32 per cent decrease.

Police put their achievements down to extra patrols in anti-social behaviour hotspots.

During the crackdown police staff and officers not normally involved in frontline policing volunteered their services.

The public were also urged to call police, send in letters and photos of problem areas.

But despite the success, 100 people a day in our area still reported being victims of anti-social behaviour during the crackdown.

Assistant Chief Constable Laura Nicholson said reducing anti-social behaviour was 'key in making our residents feel safer and more confident'.

She added: 'We still have a lot of work to do to continue to reduce the levels of anti-social behaviour and criminal damage across the force, and during the three-month campaign we have been able to improve our current processes to ensure that we are able to continue to improve our response to anti-social behaviour.'

To report anti-social behaviour in your community call Hampshire police on 101. In an emergency always call 999.
