Police hope new Coyote nightclub won't prove ugly

A controversial nightclub is set to reopen this Friday in a new guise.

After closing as Prague Junction more than three years ago, the building next to Fareham train station is coming back as Coyote Station.

The club has been named after the 2000 film Coyote Ugly which featured a raunchy bar with women dancing on the bar - which the Fareham club plans to imitate.

But police have vowed to watch the new club closely to make sure there's no repeat of the anti-social behaviour that plagued the nightspot in its former life.

And the club's owners, the Chapman Group, have agreed to tighten rules governing the running of the premises, including a strict new membership scheme.

Sergeant Roy Jennings, Fareham's licensing officer, said: 'We want to get the point across that we want people to go out and have a good time in Fareham, but we also want them to have a safe night.

'What we won't tolerate is violence and disorder - we will come down hard on any customers or premises that let that kind of behaviour take place.'

Under the new rules, the club will close at midnight from Sunday to Wednesday and at 2am on Friday and Saturday - half an hour earlier than it used to.

It will also be required to have at least three door staff on before 9pm and at least five from 9pm until closing.

And anyone wanting to enter will have to become a member, which will require showing recognised photo ID, proof of address and two passport photos, or a photo taken by the club.

The first time someone comes to the club they will need to complete the application form and have it signed off by a member of the door staff.

This application form must be kept by the venue for at least 10 years and made available to authorities on demand.

Sgt Jennings added: 'They have essentially agreed to all the conditions we put to them during our meetings.'

Owner Chris Chapman had previously submitted plans to demolish the building and put up a small restaurant and housing complex but was blocked by Fareham Borough Council.

Mr Chapman said: 'It's been sitting there empty for three years. It's a good site and we think now is the time to reopen.

'We have been working with the police and done everything they have asked.'
