Pompey to meet HMRC tomorrow

POMPEY bosses will finally get a chance to speak directly to the taxman tomorrow morning.

After an intervention by Portsmouth North MP Penny Mordaunt, HMRC has agreed to get back around the table with the club.

She will take part in a conference call in which the club is expected to ask for more time to pay its tax bill.

It comes after a winding up petition was issued by HMRC and as Pompey awaits a hearing on February 20 in the High Court to determine its fate.

oldredeye. I don't want Pompey to die, I want it to pay its taxes like everyone else has to. I'd feel exactly the same way if it was Carlisle United or Manchester City. It is morally wrong that a business with millions flowing through it and paying footballers tens of thousands a week, isn't paying its taxes & small local creditors. If the club in its current form closes as a result, then thats what happens every single day in the real world with businesses. If the club was to start up again from scratch, run properly by the fans , then I'd honestly wish them all the good luck in the world.

Post 33. If you have read through other threads the fans are'nt happy about the lack of information coming from Lampitt even if its something like a brief update of whats going on in general at the club.

SouthernDandy - The line that Pompey should die because it is a business cheating the tax man is obtuse. I don't think you're obtuse so you must be doing it on purpose, which shows you up badly. It doesn't matter you aare an eloquent scummer, youre a scummer and delighting and revelling in your rivals demise just shows us insight into your character. Or lack of it.

Penny mordant is acting as if the government has some power to dissuade the hmrc from action. Neither MPs or Portsmouth FC are above the law. The problem isn't the hmrc, its a lack of funds, and the only person who can solve that, temporarily at least is balram chanrai.

31 - Why would Lampitt get a hard time from the Fans? He's an employee of the club, no more, no less. In the situation we find ourselves in he has no more power to help then most people at the club He's not been paid either, lets not forget as have all the great staff at PFC. I think Pompey Fans should show their worth and give every employee of PFC their support. To have a go at someone who isn't getting paid but still working to try and rescue the club seems unfair to me.

Post 30 To sell players there must be willing and able buyers and all parties must agree. It is not like buying Internet time so you can spout puritanical views. Having been involved in many failing businesses and administrations, these negotiations with HMRC are not unique to Pompey, but happen almost weekly. Yes meet your liabilities but the government saved banks so there is no difference in principal.

Wonder if Lampitt will show up Tuesday night cos he knows he's going to get a hard time from the fans.

Call me cynical, spot on assessment. If you can't pay your bills by what money you have, then you sell your assets (players in the case of Pompey) to meet the shortfall. It may result in a poorer business performance, but at least the business is still going and complying with its legal (and moral) obligations. Why PFC never sold players in January is mind-boggling. Yet again, you have to say its because they feel they can cheat the system and get away with it.

If the taxman makes any deals with PFC then I think the whole tax system will be hit when the flood gates open with every man and his dog wanting similar treatment. This is a business and has its obligations to pay the tax and national insurance. This is what makes the country theoretically tick over. If the company has no money and is proved to be insolvent then it is the duty of its directors to declare its insolvency. Now having politicians involved with a great big ego driven press machine behind her, I am absolutely left speechless. This will be one rule for one and no rules for the other. It strikes me it is not just the owners that are a little bit left of the straight and narrow, but being lead by the so called leaders of our once upon a time "great country".

Pity HMRC are'nt so quick off the mark giving tax rebates when you owe them money they're all over you like a rash but when they owe you its like getting blood out a stone my wife is owed money from HMRC and all she gets is form after form to fill in.

What is there to discuss? A business that has already got away with paying tens of millions in tax... is once again not paying its tax like everyone else has to. The only item on the agenda should be Pompey handing over a cheque for what they owe.

One suspects this story has been handed to the News by Penny's press office. Ultimately it's going to be the situation that Penny can sit in on a conference call which was already arranged. Does she think that readers are silly enough to think that various conversations have not been taking place on a regular basis between PFC and HMRC? Does she think her presence will make a difference? It will probably actually curtail hard and realistic negotiations that are ongoing. But Penny wants to be seen and get her vote quotient up.

PFC10 is not a club. Its name, "Club", is misleading. Clubs are owned and run by their members. PFC10 is a money-making (or money-losing!) business. It belongs to Chainrai. -- Now Chainrai needs to buy time. Mordaunt's initiative serves Chainrai. At first sight it maybe looks "kind" of this MP to have "taken the trouble" (apart of course from the votes she hopes to pick up). In fact she is damaging the interests of the real club, us, in getting rid of Chainrai. That is, if her phone call could possibly have any effect at all, except for provoking HMRC...

So is Chainrai in England now?
