WALKING by Portsmouth Guildhall’s steps, you’ll be surprised to see most of them stripped back to their foundations.

Portsmouth City Council is hard at work repairing the brick and steel frames underneath because the weather has worn them away.

The £120,000 refurbishment, which has been paid for by the council, will be completed by April.

Portsmouth Cultural Trust, which took over the Guildhall around two years ago, will then hold a ceremony sometime in the month which will mark the re-launch of the building’s front entrance. The trust then plans to open up its doors at all times in the day for people who want to stop by and relax in new rooms where people can have coffee and admire art exhibitions.

Nick Coles, head of technical services for the trust, said: ‘The place is buzzing at the moment.

‘The trust has found its feet and is moving forward.’
