HMS Liverpool is dwarfed by the looming outline of a Russian aircraft carrier as she escorted it out of British waters.
The destroyer sailed alongside the Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov as she made her way north.
The Portsmouth-based Type 42 warship was acting as ‘Fleet Escort’ as she followed a carrier-led Russian task group from the Channel off south-west England to the seas off south west Ireland. It comes after the Portsmouth-based destroyer HMS York was sent to shadow the Kuznetsov group as it sailed south from Russia in December – the closest that a Russian naval task group had been to the United Kingdom in 20 years.
Liverpool’s Commanding Officer, Commander Colin Williams, said: ‘It is essential for the UK to maintain a military presence in our waters.’

Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 11:01 PMI am not sure particulates are covered by Kyoto, they come under general pollution legislation. But both ships will be pumping out CO2, generally the larger ship would produce more (the smoke is not the indicator).
