Portsmouth FC unveil stunning stadium vision
Pompey today revealed plans for a spectacular new 36,000-seater stadium to take the club into a new era.
Chief executive Peter Storrie described the club's proposed new waterfront stadium on Horsea Island, next to the M275, pictured on the front page, as 'perfection'.
If given the go-ahead, work could start next year, with construction of the stadium beginning in 2010.
But Pompey have not revealed when the ground is likely to be completed.
The plans – drawn up by the same architects who designed the Beijing National Stadium – also include a 10,000-capacity exhibition centre to stage concerts and indoor sporting events.
Mr Storrie said: 'We only have one word to describe this stadium – perfection.
'The club will be playing a big part in the regeneration of the city and our fans will have the very best in terms of facilities and amenities as well as an excellent viewing experience.
'Portsmouth Football Club has moved into a new era with the backing of owner Alexandre Gaydamak and these are very exciting times for the club.
'The new stadium, along with plans for the club's new training ground at the Alver Valley in Gosport are proof of where we want Pompey to be – playing at the highest level and in a stadium befitting a top Premier League side.'
Supporters will be encouraged to use buses, park and ride systems, and trains to get to the ground which will offer stunning views overlooking Portsmouth Harbour, the naval dockyards, and the Solent.
As well as the stadium there will be an unspecified number of residential homes, retail and leisure facilities.
A naval diving and training facility will also be built at the MoD-owned site in a deal struck with the navy.
Fratton Park will be redeveloped on a phased basis, with work starting on the current car park and adjacent land while Pompey are still playing at the ground.
The number of homes and shops to be built at Fratton has not yet been revealed, but the club said the scheme will be 'low-rise'.
The stadium has received the backing from a number of councillors and city council leaders.
Mike Hancock, MP for Portsmouth South, said: 'I am delighted they are now in the position to launch and I hope we will see it take shape very quickly.
'The biggest obstacle they will have is highways matters, but if they can get everything in the right sequence I think it will be good for the city.'
David Williams, chief executive of the city council, said: 'I think the plans for the new stadium and arena are very exciting, and the stadium in that location would look stunning.'
Councillor Jim Patey, leader of the Labour party in Portsmouth, said: 'It is extremely exciting, in particular for the north of the city. It will help overcome some of the traffic problems we have on match days.
'The stadium would be quite a distance away from the residential part of Port Solent.
'We have waited a long time for an exciting stadium.'
