Prime Minister Gordon Brown's carrier support
The prime minister has echoed the defence secretary's public vow of support for the navy's new aircraft carrier programme.
Speaking in the House of Commons yesterday, Gordon Brown said they would go ahead in the face of opposition from other parties.
Bob Ainsworth had said both carriers would be delivered despite the prospect of cuts in a new defence review.
Mr Brown said: 'We are committed to building aircraft carriers.
'They give work to all parts of the country.
'We believe that they are an important part of our naval equipment for the future and the programme will proceed whatever the views of opposition parties.'
The 5bn, 65,000-ton vessels are due to be based in Portsmouth from 2016 and 2018, barring any further delays to their manufacture.
