Prisoner appears in court after escaping custody
A prisoner appeared in court today after allegedly escaping from a court by switching identities with his twin brother.
Simon Maclellan, 27, from Gosport in Hampshire, was charged with escaping from lawful custody and attempting to pervert the course of justice.
He was remanded in custody during today's appearance at Portsmouth Magistrates Court to appear before Portsmouth Crown Court for a plea and directions hearing on October 19.
His brother Mark, 27, has also been charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice, and will appear before magistrates on July 30.
Simon Maclellan, who was on remand at Winchester Prison for a serious assault, allegedly walked free from a court on Friday afternoon after he pretended to be his twin brother and was released by magistrates.
He was arrested at an address in Fareham, Hampshire, on Saturday.
Mark Reedes, 27, from Fareham, who was also arrested in connection with the incident has been charged with cultivating cannabis and obstructing police. He will appear before magistrates on July 30.
