Prolific thief is sent to jail after spate of shoplifting

A PROLIFIC thief has been jailed for three months.

Christopher Martin has more than 60 previous convictions for theft.

In his latest series of offences he stole food from five shops between January and July.

The 31-year-old took 72 of meat from Tesco Express at Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth before stealing 30 of lamb joints from the Co-op in Great Southsea Street, Southsea.

In February, he snatched 25 of meat from the Co-op in New Road, Portsmouth.

In June he stole 65 of meat from the Co-op in The Hard, Portsmouth. He was arrested after taking 2 worth of food from the Co-op in Isambard Brunel Road.

Martin, of Waverley Road, Southsea, pleaded guilty to five counts of theft at Portsmouth Magistrates' Court.

The magistrates jailed him after hearing he had 61 previous convictions for theft.
