Protector breaks the ice
BREAKING THE ICE HMS Protector and her seaboats in Port Lockroy on the peninsula of Antarctica
THE Royal Navy’s new ice patrol ship has cut through the floes of Antarctica for the first time.
Having arrived in the frozen continent, the ice-breaker sailed to Deception Island – a stunning water-filled volcano that is one of two in the world.
The dormant attraction is popular with tourists but sailing into the cone is challenging. In 2007, a cruise ship ran aground there and had to be rescued by former ice ship HMS Endurance.
Protector sent in her small survey boat James Caird IV with Multi-Beam Echo Sounder equipment to survey the area known as Neptune’s Bellows.
The information will be used by the UK Hydrographic Office to produce accurate charts for ships in the area.
