Pub chain joins up in battle to defeat the drink-drivers

One of the biggest pub chains in the country has thrown its support behind The News' Steer Clear campaign.

The annual campaign aims to persuade drivers not to risk drinking before getting behind the wheel at Christmas time.

Many pubs, bars and clubs across the area have already pledged their support.

And now Wetherspoon has agreed to get on board for the week between December 17 and Christmas Eve.

The campaign, which is now in its eighth year, aims to cut the number of drink-drivers on our roads with pubs pledging to offer free soft drinks to designated drivers.

The News' Steer Clear campaign will run throughout December - up to and including New Year's Eve.

Eddie Gershon, a spokesman for Wetherspoon, said: 'Wetherspoon is delighted to back The News campaign.

Our pubs take the issue of responsible drinking very seriously and the campaign by The News takes takes this on board in a very positive way.

'We look forward to serving free soft drinks to designated drivers across our pubs in Portsmouth, Fareham, Havant, Gosport and Chichester.'

Landlords who are taking part in the Steer Clear campaign have pledged to give the designated driver in a group of four or more a free soft drink - a lemonade, tonic, squash, cola or coffee - between 6pm and 9pm.

Some landlords say they will provide non-alcoholic refills to the driver.

Wetherspoon pubs taking part in the campaign this year in Portsmouth are Lloyds No.1 Bar at The Boardwalk in Port Solent, The Isambard Kingdom Brunel and The White Swan in Guildhall Walk, The John Jacques in Fratton Road, The Sir John Baker in London Road and The Trafalgar in Edinburgh Road.

The Crown Inn and The Lord Arthur Lee in West Street, Fareham, The Star in High Street, Gosport, The Parchment Makers in Park Road North, Havant, The Dolphin and Anchor in West Street, Chichester and The Gatehouse, Chichester Gate, Chichester, are also taking part in the campaign.
