Pupils add splash of colour to hospital

Children in hospital are to benefit from specially- designed artwork to brighten up their stays.

Students at Kingscourt School in Catherington have come up with colourful illustrations that will adorn the walls of the paediatric unit at the new 256m Queen Alexandra superhospital.

The centre was 10 years in the planning and has been largely designed by clinicians. Staff, children and their families have all had a say in how the unit will look and worked closely with the professional designers, who created an under-the-sea theme.

Children's unit matron Lesley Coles said: 'Wards are named after sea creatures. For instance, we have Seahorse, Starfish and Turtle wards, and we've followed the story of a deep-sea diver on his daily adventures.

'I approached Kingscourt School to see if they would like to produce some colourful artwork illustrating our diver's stories and they were very happy to help out.

'Pupils should feel really proud of their artwork and know that they will contribute to making any child's visit or stay in hospital a much better, less intimidating experience.'

Kingscourt head teacher Jacky Easton said: 'We were delighted to be asked to contribute to such an important children's area.'

The artwork will be presented on Tuesday.
