Pupils scoop Britain in Bloom award
A SCHOOL has got the best gardens in the whole region - thanks to the dedication of its pupils.
The grounds of Northern Junior School in Portchester beat more than 200 other school to the title of best in the South and South East In Bloom.
The prize-winning gardens, which saw off competition from as far afield as Dorset and Kent, had already been chosen to represent Fareham in next month's prestigious nationwide Britain In Bloom contest.
Jade Tilbrook, eight, is a member of the school's ground force which helps look after the gardens. She said: 'We won it by putting some oomph into it.
'I was so excited when I heard we had won - I couldn't believe how well our hard work had done.
And William Gardner, eight, added: 'I think we can win Britain In Bloom too - we are going to work really hard on it.'
Heather Scott is the volunteer who has led the programme for the past decade. She said: 'We teach the whole of the curriculum outside here - the children live it and love it.
'If we have a happy environment here than that's all the better for the children.'
Councillor Connie Hockley, in charge of community matters for Fareham, said: 'The enthusiasm, commitment and community spirit of the school is amazing.
'It's well deserved and I'm very proud of the work they all do.'
The grounds are open to the public this Sunday as part of the Gardens in Fareham charity scheme. Tickets cost 5 and give access to six of the other gardens also representing Fareham In Bloom.
