Pupils win lesson with Big Bang celebrity

PUPILS at Springfield School in Portsmouth are feeling out of this world after winning the chance to be taught by celebrity TV scientist Professor Brian Cox.

Thousands of youngsters took part in the nationwide prize draw to see the Wonders of The Solar System presenter visit their school and teach the lesson of a lifetime on November 16.

The competition captured young imaginations with record numbers of schoolchildren drumming up support from friends and classmates to enter the lesson lottery.

But it was Springfield that reigned victorious after registering their school on the Big Bang website.

Lynn Evans, headteacher at Springfield, in Drayton, and a chemistry graduate, said: 'Both staff and students are over the moon to have won this amazing opportunity.

'I'm sure that some amongst the audience will look back on this event as the inspiration they needed to pursue careers in science and engineering or to follow their own dream.'

The coup for the school comes soon after it was ranked outstanding for its science department in an Ofsted report.

The Big Bang Lesson comes courtesy of The Big Bang: UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair 2011, who have teamed up with particle physicist Prof Cox.

It promises to be a mind-blowing workshop to show just how fascinating science, technology, engineering and maths can be.

Prof Cox, formerly the keyboard player for popular 90s band D:Ream who had a number 1 hit with Things Can Olny Get Better in 1994, said: 'I was truly overwhelmed by the number of competition entries.

'It's wonderful that so many young people want to learn about our fascinating and beautiful universe.

'Science, technology, engineering and maths always captured my imagination.

'They are the subjects that deal with the grandest and most exciting questions, and I look forward to taking my students at Springfield on a far-flung journey of fun and discovery.'

The competition was run by The Big Bang, one of the UK's biggest celebrations of science and engineering, which will take place at ICC London ExCeL from 10 to 12 March and is free to attend.
