Readers back call for disgraced Gosport MP to go now
Readers of The News have thrown their weight behind our campaign calling for Gosport MP Sir Peter Viggers to stand down.
Dozens of the Tory's constituents said he should step down immediately, rather than cling on until the next general election.
Many have vented their anger at his extravagant expenses claims – including 1,645 for a duck island – by supporting our Taxi for Viggers campaign and posting comments on our website portsmouth.co.uk.
Andrew Clarke, from Gosport, wrote: 'How can he consider himself as an Honourable Gentleman?
'He should have his knighthood removed and stand down at once. What icon is he to our younger generation?
'Sir Peter I am disgusted with you – fall on your sword.'
Millionaire Sir Peter was told by Tory leader David Cameron to quit his Gosport seat at the next election after the duck house claim came to light. But The News says enough is enough and is calling on him to quit now.
If he does stand down he won't receive the 32,000 resettlement payment which is paid out to MPs who quit or lose their seat at a general election.
A resident with the on-line name twosheds wrote: 'His leader does not want him, his constituents are disgusted with him.
'What influence or any good can he possibly do now?
'He is hanging on for the money, hoping this will all go away or be overtaken by some other sleazy story associated with our MPs. It won't.
'He should go and leave the area in disgrace. I bet he won't, though. Ego and finance comes before honour or doing the proper thing.'
But Sir Peter has received some support from his Tory colleagues in Gosport who blamed the expenses system.
Councillor Roger Allen said: 'If there is blame then it belongs with the governing party in Parliament that conceived this ridiculous system of expenses that was just a bear trap that so many MPs wandered into.
'The system must go and MPs must be provided with a system of remuneration that is transparent and commensurate with their expertise and responsibility.'
Sir Peter was unavailable for comment.
