Redknapp: ‘It really has been a nightmare’

HARRY Redknapp has spoken of his relief after he was cleared of tax evasion.

Speaking outside Southwark Crown Court this morning Redknapp said the investigation had been horrendous.

The former Pompey manager was cleared along with former chairman Milan Mandaric of two charges of cheating the public revenue.

Leaving court Redknapp , 64, said: ‘I just really want to thank my legal team, they were fantastic, the support I have had from everyone at Tottenham.

‘Daniel Levy, who if he ever felt there was a problem when he gave me this job he would never have employed me.

‘I just have to thank the fans, especially the fans of Tottenham who were at Wigan the other night singing my name, that will always be special to me.

‘I will never forget that.

‘Most importantly my family. Five years this has been hanging over us. I’m really just looking forward to going home and seeing my wife Sandra and getting away from all this.

‘It really has been a nightmare. It’s been five years and this is a case that should never have come to court really.

‘It’s been horrendous.

‘I am pleased now I can go away and get on with our lives.’

The prosecution claimed Mandaric made two payments, in 2002 and 2004, as a bonus from the profit of the sale of striker Peter Crouch and for getting Pompey into the Premier League and keeping them up.

It was alleged the money was paid into a Monaco account in a deliberate ploy by both men to evade tax.

The jury took five and a half hours to find both men not guilty.
