Householders today described the drama as fire swept through the roof of Emsworth Sailing Club after a car crashed into the building.
One resident of Creek End, said: ‘I heard a massive bang at around 6.30am but didn’t know what it was.
‘Then I heard a lot of sirens and saw all the fire engines going toward the sailing club.’
Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said the driver of the vehicle was rescued before the fire took hold.
Fire investigators moved in after the blaze was extinguished.
Another resident from Creek End said: ‘I heard the sirens and there were so many I went and had a look.
‘There was loads of smoke coming from the roof of the club.’
A third resident added: ‘I was walking by dog early this morning along the shore and I saw lots of black smoke coming from the club.
‘The were lots of firefighters and fire engines.
‘I can’t believe no one was badly hurt.’
