Residents losing sleep over loud, low-flying planes
MYSTERIOUS low-flying planes have been keeping residents awake at night.
The night-time rumblings have been going on above Waterlooville since early summer and are so loud they can be heard above the television.
One resident said it sounded as if the plane was going to crash into her house.
But they have been unable to find out who the planes belong to. Planes from the airfield at Popham, near Andover, only take off during daylight hours.
And Hampshire Constabulary's plane stopped flying in October due to cuts.
Both NATS air traffic control and the Civil Aviation Authority only deal with commercial planes which would not be heard at such a low level.
Eileen Langford, of Bernina Close, Waterlooville, said: 'It's so loud it sounds as if it's coming in to land. It happens at all hours of the night and it wakes me up.
'Once you're awake you're so worried about it happening again that you can't sleep. It's such a nuisance and it's happening so often at the moment at the weekends.
'I want to get to the bottom of it but every avenue I try proves fruitless.
'It sounds as if the plane is coming over our house and then back again, as if they are looking for something.'
The MoD has also looked at the timings from the past month, and say its nothing to do with them. A spokesman said it would be 'very, very rare' for exercises to take place at the weekend. So the mystery continues.
Pat Stevens, 68, also of Bernina Close, said: 'When I first heard them I assumed they were something to do with the police but we've found out they are not.
'They are very loud and very low. In fact, if this was a script for a science fiction film, it seems like they're trying to go under the radar. That's the sense you get.
'I jokingly said to my daughter that it sounds like they are going to land on the roof.'
