PORTSMOUTH City Council is advising people on how to deal with cold callers during National Consumer Week.
Residents are urged to be wary when dealing with doorstep callers, use a door chain if they have one, always ask for ID, and use a door sticker to deter unwanted cold callers.
The authority is reminding people that it is a criminal offence for a caller to fail to leave your property if you have asked them to do so.
There are a number of no cold calling zones in Portsmouth, including Grove Road, Old Manor Way, Eastern Avenue, Waterlooville Street and Carnavon Road.
Alan Cufley, head of service for Trading Standards at the city council, said: ‘We would like to give Portsmouth residents the confidence to say “no” to cold callers if they wish to do so.
‘There are many genuine callers, but there are also a lot of rogue traders and bogus callers who con residents out of money. I want everyone to be aware of their options and the law relating to cold callers, but it is our vulnerable residents who sadly tend to be targeted.’
