Risk from self-harm

FAILED asylum seekers are at risk from self-harming, figures reveal.

The National Coalition of Anti-Deportation Campaigns released data showing that a refused asylum seeker in UK Immigration Removal Centres attempts self-harm serious enough to need medical treatment every other day.

But despite Haslar Immigration Centre having three people being listed as at risk from self harming, there were no recorded cases.

In the 10 months from April 2006 to January 2007 there were 176 attempts to self-harm across the country.

And since the first Immigration Removal Centre opened in the UK there have been 10 deaths from self-harm.

A full break down for centres can be found at http://www.ncadc.org.uk/resourcesself-harm 2006.html.
