THE driver of a car that hit a speed camera has been taken to hospital with serious multiple injuries.

A male in his 50s was driving a blue Hyundai and was going down Northern Parade, in Hilsea, near to the Magdalen Road junction, when he went into a speed camera in the middle of the road.

South Central Ambulance Service sent one ambulance and an officer, and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was also scrambled.

All crews treated the man at the scene, before he was taken to Southampton General Hospital in a land ambulance.

A Scas spokesman said: ‘We were called at 10.07am to Northern Parade.

‘We sent an ambulance and an ambulance officer, and the air ambulance.

‘A man in his 50s sustained serious, multiple injuries and was taken to Southampton by a land ambulance.

‘There are no reports of other patients.’

The road was closed in both directions by Hampshire police, and was reopened at midday.

Two crews from Cosham were called at 10.10am and had to cut the roof off the car, in order to free the man.
