Royal Hospital Haslar closes after 250 years

The last inpatients will leave the Royal Hospital Haslar for the final time in its 250-year history next week.

By Tuesday no more major operations will take place at the Gosport site, with all inpatient clinics transferred to the new Queen Alexandra 'superhospital' in Cosham.

Patients recovering from operations and procedures will be looked after by nurses and doctors at Haslar for a further three days.

But by next Friday any patients remaining will either be transferred to QA to finish their recuperation, or go home, if they are well enough.

Cllr Peter Edgar, from the Save Haslar Task Force, said: 'It will be a very, very sad day and obviously one of great regret.

'It's still difficult to find any people in the region in favour of this and a lot of people are upset and think that Haslar could have been retained as a back-up for QA.'

Over recent weeks facilities have been transferred to QA as Haslar slowly winds down.

The orthopaedic wards are set to be moved on Monday with the surgical ward breast and plastics – the final inpatient clinic – moved on Tuesday.

The final outpatient clinic will take place on July 9 for those who have already made appointments.

People who have made appointments for later dates have been notified that they won't be seen at Haslar.

The majority of outpatient facilities are being relocated to Gosport War Memorial.

From Monday July 6 the outpatient department at the War Memorial hospital will have more consulting rooms and an extra X-ray room.

It will house more than 60 outpatient clinics including diabetes and ear, nose and throat.

Blood-taking services will move from the Bury Road site to six GP surgeries in Gosport and Stubbington following a pilot scheme.

Tests will be done by appointment only.

A nurse-led minor injuries unit will open on July 4 and operate a walk-in service seven days a week.

Inger Hebden, director of capital planning at NHS Hampshire, said: 'We'd like to say a huge thank you to all patients and staff for their patience during this time.

'We hope the local population will benefit from the range of new facilities and clinics which will be available at Gosport War Memorial Hospital.'

PARTY MARKS IMPENDING CLOSURE

Staff at the hospital will be marking its impending closure with a party in the grounds tomorrow.

About 800 staff along with friends and family are set to attend and celebrate Haslar's history.

It will be held from 3pm to 10pm on the Medical Mess Lawn at Haslar but it is an invitation-only event and members of the public won't be admitted.

The farewell party will feature a barbecue, live bands and a disco as well as Haslar heritage tours.
