IF YOU heard sirens in Gosport town centre at the weekend, don’t worry – it was a safer neighbourhood day.

The event returned to the town hall for the third year on Saturday.

Hundreds of people met scores of community groups and services.

The event was opened by mayor Cllr John Beavis, who is also chairman of the Community Safety Partnership, and Police and Crime Commissioner Simon Hayes.

Mr Hayes attended last year’s event and said he was so impressed he wanted to return to see the good work taking place in Gosport.

Mr Hayes said: ‘It shows how much is going on in Gosport. Gosport is a safe place to live where the police do a good job. There is also a good number of successful partnerships.’

The police, fire service, coastguard, probation service, Gosport Street Pastors, Two Saints and Fareham and Gosport Family Aid, plus many others, held stalls at the event.

Suzanne Pepper, chairwoman of Gosport Older People’s Forum, said: ‘It is great, anything that promotes people looking after themselves and being safe is great. We are very proud of our town and borough and we want people to be out enjoying it as much as they can.’

Gosport and Fareham Inshore Rescue Service (Gafirs) was there with one of its boats. Five-year-old Billy, who was at the day with his dad Ryan Burningham, 40, had a tour of the boat.

Billy said: ‘I like the boats because they go fast and Fireman Sam let me turn on the sirens and gave me some sweets.’
