Sailors help with school centenary party

Hundreds of children and former pupils celebrated their school's centenary in style.

A week-long range of celebrations took place at St John's Primary School in Gosport. More than 400 pupils and staff donned outfits from down the decades, from punks to Edwardian ladies.

There was a party in the playground, entertainers singing songs from the different eras and a disco. Then around 250 former pupils paid a visit.

Teacher Anna Dawes said: 'It was absolutely fantastic, a really enjoyable series of celebrations.'

The school building in Grove Road, Gosport, is 100 years old but the school existed before that in a different location.

The centenary coincided with the opening of the school's new nurture centre, designed to give children extra support in areas such as social skills and working in a team, which was officially opened by the Mayor of Gosport, Cllr Diane Searle.

Meanwhile, sailors from HMS Collingwood in Fareham also dropped by to help the school prepare for the celebrations.
