Scrapyard blaze
European Metal Recycling (EMR) in Dundas Spur, Hilsea, was on fire on Friday
AROUND 800 tonnes of scrap metal caught fire at a metal recycling centre.
The blaze broke out at European Metal Recycling, in Dundas Spur, Hilsea, just after 11am yesterday.
Two crews from Cosham, two from Southsea, a retained crew from Portchester and the special equipment unit, were sent.
It took 25 firefighters 50 minutes to control the flames.
Watch manager Jamie Wren of Cosham fire station said: ‘We were called to 800 tonnes of metal which was on fire.
‘Because of the density we would have struggled to contain the fire, so we made about 15 to 20 heaps to make it more manageable.’
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
