Sea cadet died because of chest injuries
A sea cadet who fell 30 feet from a training ship died from chest injuries, a post mortem found.
Jonathan Martin, 14, fell in to the Solent near Stokes Bay, Gosport on Sunday.
The youngster from Ashford, Kent, was one of a number of Sea Cadets performing routine exercises aboard the training ship TS Royalist.
He was helping to bring in the sails when he fell to his death.
The ship had sailed out to Stokes Bay, when at about 8.30pm, Jonathan fell from rigging into the water. He was recovered by a lifeboat and efforts were made to revive him.
He was taken by helicopter to Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The boy was one of 19 cadets and 10 staff participating in a week-long exercise which began on Friday to mark the 150th anniversary of the Sea Cadets.
A post-mortem was performed on the boy yesterday.
A Hampshire police spokeswoman said: 'Jonathan died as a result of severe chest injuries because of his fall from a height. His family have been notified.'
A file has been prepared for the coroner.
Meanwhile, efforts continue to establish exactly how the accident happened.
Maritime Accident Investigation Branch has two inspectors on site and the vessel is in Fort Blockhouse, Gosport.
