Second Tory defector joins the city Lib Dems
A second Conservative councillor has crossed the floor and joined the Lib Dems.
Central Southsea councillor Margaret Adair quit her party on Friday and signed up to the rivals.
As reported in The News, Cllr Adair was expected to follow in the footsteps of former Tory councillor Lee Hunt, who quit his party after claiming he was the victim of an internal hate campaign.
Cllr Adair, who has been a friend of Cllr Hunt for more than 30 years, said she would always support him, adding: 'It is all to do with the way Lee was treated in the south Conservatives (Association).
'They made it impossible for him to do his job.
'It is going to take some getting used to, but I think we will be able to work together very well now with the Lib Dems.'
The move has strengthened the Lib Dems' strength in the city, giving them 23 seats to the Tories' 17 and Labour's two.
As reported, independent councillors Leo Madden and Jason Fazackarley also defected to the Lib Dems last week.
It is the first time one party has had overall control of the council since 2000.
Cllr Adair plans to step down when her current term ends in 2011.
