Shark spotted in water

A 5ft-long shark was spotted swimming in Chichester Harbour.

James Parkin, wildlife officer for Chichester Harbour Conservancy, explained: ‘The sailor who reported the sighting described it as around 1.5m in length and it’s likely to have been a Tope or type of Smoothhound that feed on small fish and crustaceans.

‘This sailor was fortunate to have the experience of seeing a shark at close hand in the harbour as they are rarely spotted on the surface of the water.’
