Shock as teenager finds insect in sandwich
DISCOVERING a large insect in her sandwich left Georgia Davis retching for four hours.
The 15-year-old student almost swallowed the head of a creature, believed to be a locust, after biting into a barbecue chicken wrap she had bought from her local Co-operative shop.
Initially believing it was a piece of burnt chicken, the student was repulsed to discover the rest of the bug hidden in the other half of her snack.
'It was just horrific,' she said. 'When I pulled the body out of the wrap and I saw what it was I thought I was going to be sick.
'I started gagging and retching and couldn't stop for hours. I feel ill now just thinking about it.'
Cutting short their trip to the local playing fields, Georgia and her friend Jess marched straight back to the Co-operative store on Warsash Road and presented the discovery to the manager.
'In fairness the man we spoke to in the shop was very good,' said Georgia, of Spinnaker Mews, Warsash. 'He agreed that it was completely vile and said he would send it off for testing straight away.'
Her mum Claire Chambers, 50, was not impressed. She said: 'It's just so horrible, I doubt Georgia will ever eat anything from that shop ever again.'
Claire said her daughter, who goes to Brookfield Community School in Locks Heath, was promised vouchers as compensation but has not heard anything since.
She said: 'I thought we might get a phone call of apology from their head office.'
A spokesman for The Co-operative said: 'We received a complaint from a customer at our Warsash store, who bought a product there which appeared to contain an insect.
'The product was returned to our store, where staff provided a full refund, and it has been sent to our head office for analysis.
'We will be taking this matter up with our supplier, and will update the customer.'
