Shock for neighbours after Gosport stabbing
Neighbours have spoken of their shock after a man was stabbed in the stomach.
The 34-year-old victim was knifed during a dispute with a neighbour in Prideaux-Brune Avenue in Bridgemary, Gosport, at about 6.20pm on Sunday.
He remains in a stable condition in hospital.
As reported in The News yesterday, a 45-year-old man - a neighbour of the victim - was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
He remains in police custody.
Neighbours Sue and Steve Batten, who live next door to the arrested man, say they heard an argument and tried to break up the fight, before calling the police.
Mrs Batten, 48, said: 'We heard it all.
'We were having a barbecue.
'They were arguing in the kitchen. We don't know what caused it at all.'
Speaking of the arrested man, she added: 'He has been a very good neighbour to us for three years.
'He keeps himself to himself.
'He was very helpful when we first moved in.
'He's a very polite and decent bloke. We have never had any problems with him at all.'
Another neighbour, Helen Cowling, 43, added: 'It's a bit shocking. I wouldn't see him as the sort of person who would do something like that.
'He's always been a nice bloke to talk to.'
Councillor Dennis Wright, who represents Bridgemary North, said: 'From what I have gathered so far it's some sort of neighbourly dispute.
'It is a quiet residential area.
'I was surprised to hear that an incident had happened in that sort of area.
'Hopefully it's a one-off.'
Anyone with any information about the stabbing should call Inspector Dave Ockleford at Fareham police station on 0845 045 45 45 or 1-1.
