Signalling fault halts trains in Portsmouth

South West Trains services were hit by a signalling fault

South West Trains services were hit by a signalling fault

Trains in and out of Portsmouth were halted today because of a signalling error.

The problem left services out of action between Portsmouth Harbour, Fareham and Havant stations.

Replacement buses are running between Portsmouth Harbour and Havant, stopping at Portsmouth and Southsea and Hilsea stations.

Thousands of football fans travelling to Pompey’s home game against Fleetwood Town were among those affected by the stoppage.

A spokesman for South West Trains said earlier today: ‘We’ve got engineers going out to the site.’

South West Trains ran shorter train services from Southampton and Eastleigh to Fareham Railway Station.

The spokesman said alternative transport would be arranged for anyone wanting to travel from Portchester or Cosham stations.

She said: ‘People should enquire at the office or the help point at the station.’

Passengers have been advised that their train tickets will be also valid on regular Stagecoach and First buses during the disruption.

Buses 20, 21, 23 and 700 run from Portsmouth Harbour to Havant railway station.

Delays were expected to continue until 4pm.
