Sister's fury over lost trail of sex offender

The sister of a murdered Polish student has criticised police for losing track of the serious sex offender officers were interviewing today.

A murder inquiry has been launched following the discovery of 23-year-old Angelika Kluk's body in a Glasgow church on Friday.

Former Leigh Park resident Peter Tobin, who worked as a handyman at the chapel, was arrested in London on Saturday by the Metropolitan Police.

But Ms Kluk's sister Aneta, who lives in Glasgow, criticised police for not keeping a close on Tobin, a registered sex offender, in a message she posted on the internet.

She said: 'How could police lose track of him in the electronic age?'

All week while the search for her sister was carried out, Aneta, 28, has been posting her thoughts on an internet forum used by members of Scotland's Polish community.

Strathclyde Police last night travelled to London to bring 60-year-old Tobin back to their force area for interview.

He is being held on an unrelated matter for an outstanding warrant under Section 84 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003, police said.

Miss Kluk's body was found at St Patrick's Church, where she had been staying since July, in Glasgow's Anderston area.

The languages student had been due to fly home and resume her studies at university in Gdansk tomorrow.

She was last seen in the grounds of the chapel last Sunday and was reported missing after failing to turn up at her cleaning job on Monday.

At a news conference, Detective Superintendent David Swindle of Strathclyde Police said the student's body was found in the chapel's 'main confines'.

Following the post-mortem examination, he would not be drawn on the Miss Kluk's cause of death or say whether she was sexually assaulted.

But he added: 'All I can say is it was a horrific and very, very violent attack on a young lady.'

A police cordon has been put in place across the gates to the chapel house at St Patrick's, where forensic teams are continuing their work.
