Smokers helped to break free

Smokers across the city were encouraged to kick the habit and break free yesterday as part of national No Smoking Day.

The PompeyQuit team visited various venues across Portsmouth to try and encourage as many people as possible to quit.

This year's No Smoking Day theme was designed to show cigarettes in the way many smokers see them - like a ball and chain holding them back.

The stop smoking team wore convict outfits and battled with giant cigarettes to show people they can break the habit.

Sally Northeast, from NHS Portsmouth's stop smoking service, said: 'The day went really well.

'We had lots of interest from people who want to quit, which was fantastic.'

Since last year's No Smoking Day, PompeyQuit has helped more then 1,200 people in the city quit.

This year to improve their services they also carried out surveys of smokers.
