Sowing seeds for a sustainable future

A PLANTING day will be held this weekend for a community orchard in Clanfield.

The event on Saturday has been organised by Greening Clanfield, which is aiming to promote projects that help the environment.

Twenty trees – a collection of apple, pear, plum and damson – have already been planted at South Lane Meadow.

The final 10 trees will include some more unusual fruits such as greengages, cob nuts and a medlar.

Local businesses have sponsored the scheme, which has been made possible thanks to funding from the National Gardens Scheme.

The first trees were planted in the autumn of 2011.

Villagers plan to hold pruning and harvesting days, as well as workshops so people can learn how to care for the community orchard.

People will gather for the planting day at about 10.30am for an 11am start.

Anyone wanting to find out more can contact Peter Rodgers on (023) 9264 7572.
