Special sculpture will ensure First World War is not forgotten

An artist whose grandfather lost his arm in the First World War took a sculpture he made to one of yesterday's services.

Roger Holman, from Havant, took his work, which shows a First World War Tommy staring at the grave of a German soldier, to the Guildhall.

The 47-year-old was approached by dozen of veterans and interested people who praised his work.

Mr Holman, whose son recently returned from service in Afghanistan, decided to create the sculpture to make sure the First World War isn't forgotten.

Mr Holman said: 'I think my grandfather would be proud of the sculpture, going by the responses I've had from other veterans at the service. Everyone I spoke to seemed to like it.

'So many people lost their lives in the First World War – I just want to make sure it's not forgotten.'

Also at the service in the Guildhall was Charles Hutchinson, who served in the navy for two years after the Second World War.

Over the last three years, the 79-year-old, of Milton, Portsmouth, has raised 6,500 for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

He said: 'It's a very emotional day for me because I give up a lot of my time for the Poppy Appeal.

'I don't have much money, but I do have time to spare and I give as much of that as I can to help with the appeal.'
