Steel band spices up seasonal favourites

SOUNDS of Christmas rang out around Portsmouth Guildhall at this year's annual civic carol service organised by the Salvation Army.

A steel band added new twists to traditional carols, while the more familiar sounds of brass and voice combined under the theme the Glory of Christmas.

It also featured festive readings, performances by children and dramatisations of the nativity scene accompanied by music from the Salvation Army choir.

The event raised 1,000 for Panjazz International, a charity which specialises in music education and performance.

Major Cedric Hills, commanding officer of the Portsmouth Citadel Corps, said: 'We wish to thank the Guildhall audience for their generous donations to the Panjazz International appeal.

'Our musicians really appreciate the support we receive when out playing carols – it's great that people stop, listen and even sing along.'

The weekend event was formally opened by the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Councillor Richard Jensen.
