Stitchers show there's more to embroidery than threads

Decorative, garnished and gilded works of embroidery caught the eye at a display at Portsmouth College.

Hundreds of pieces of work were exhibited at the college created by 16 adult students on the college's creative embroidery course.

The handbags, quilts and jewellery rolls were made during the four-week course – including ones by Diane Atkins, 63, from Portchester, who last year survived the devastating earthquake while on holiday in China.

Course tutor Jan Tregidgo said: 'When an external moderator came to college she said of all the college she's visited, ours was the best.

'She was very impressed with the standard of the work.

'For some of the works we had to eat a lot of tomato puree because the gold strips inside the tubing is perfect for embroidery.

'I encourage my students to be as free as they can. It's a very creative, off the wall course.'
