Students help with wildlife haven project
A volunteering project saw students from Highbury College in Portsmouth chip in to help restore a Havant wildlife haven.
The Southmoor Hill area is being given a conservation makeover as part of a year-long project funded by volunteering programme GreenPrints.
Highbury students teamed up with environmental conservation charity BCTV to help clear the steps of the hill and install benches for walkers to enjoy its beautiful views of Langstone Harbour.
Rachel Moroney, community project officer for BTCV, said: 'This is a 12-month project aimed at getting 16- to 25-year-olds volunteering in the outside.
'We are going to be working in the meadow in the summer pulling up Ragwort, which is poisonous for livestock, and planting more meadow flowers which will help improve the site for butterflies, insects and other wildlife.'
All 24 Highbury College students who have taken part in the project so far will be presented with badges and certificates from the Highbury Leadership Academy, set up to help students develop their leadership skills and enhance their employability.
Louise Mayall, work related learning officer at the college, said: 'One of my main roles is getting students involved in the local community in various projects that are of benefit to the community and businesses.
'They did this task really well and quickly too. What impressed me was the speed they got the task done in which was fantastic.'
