Sultan unveils a spirit of wonder

HMS Sultan was packed to the rafters for the annual summer show over the weekend.

From the dog team to the motorcycle display to the steam rally, there were events to keep families entertained.

And as the rain stayed off, more and more people began to pass through the gates to enjoy the annual show, which took place over Saturday and Sunday at HMS Sultan in Military Road in Gosport.

There was a funfair for the children to enjoy, stalls selling arts and crafts and helicopters for children to have a climb in.

Gary Bateman, 42, from Brockhurst Road, took his two children, Harry, six, and Charlie, seven, to the event.

He said: 'We come every year. It's always good putting something back into the local community.

'It's great for the kids – the boys love it.

There are so many events going on and it's good for them to see what the navy do.'

Jean Hey, 37, from Findon Road in Gosport, was at the show with her son Ben, eight.

She said: 'We always come down. We like all the activities that are on. It's a great family day out.

'It's great to get the kids out and find new activities that they are interested in.'

Commodore Al Rymer, said: 'I'm pleased with how it went. There was a lot of support from the people who are coming to put their acts on. There's been a steady stream of people coming through the gate.

'It's something that people really want to do – to have a look at the navy and the armed forces and see what they do.

'For me, it's important that we are allowing people to have a look at what the navy do.

'We work hard to make the tickets affordable so families can come and enjoy it.

It's a nice safe environment for families to come to.

'We are also raising a lot of money for local charities – over the past few years we have raised 100,000 which is fantastic.
