Teenager recovering from cancer meets up with Dame
A FAREHAM youngster recovering from a rare form of cancer was given a unique opportunity to meet Dame Ellen MacArthur and join her trust for a week of outdoor fun.
Stephanie Pinnels, 16, is in remission from osteosarcoma, a form of cancer which affects teenage bones.
She was one of 38 youngsters who are all in remission from cancer or leukaemia who were given the opportunity to join the Ellen MacArthur Trust in Essex.
Stephanie first sailed with the trust on a four-day yacht trip in the Solent.
She said: 'I gained so much confidence from it - I can't wait to go back for another.'
The Cowes-based charity was set up by Dame Ellen in 2003 after she spent time with a similar organisation in France and aims to inspire young people's cancer recovery through sailing.
Youngsters who join Dame Ellen's residential sailing courses are able to gain their Royal Yachting Association dinghy sailing qualifications, and improve their sailing skills.
They also try a variety of challenges and activities such as canoeing, facing fears on the high ropes, cycling, archery and kite flying.
